My Teaching Philosophy
As a teacher, I strive to impart a love of learning to my students. Since learning has always been at the heart of everything that I do, I draw from my education and life experiences to pass this fervor on to my students.
One of my first classes in college was a study of the history of philosophy. The one thing that I took from this is a lecture about Socrates’ method of teaching. According to that great philosopher, all knowledge is within us and it is up to the teacher to empower the student to discover that knowledge. As a teacher, I always plan for those “ah ha” moments. That is when the child appears to say, “Wow, I knew that all along. I just needed someone to teach me how to find it.”
Most students want to learn, it is up to the teacher to give them the tools to do that. Not everyone learns the same way; therefore, it is up to the teacher to evaluate students individually and determine the most effective instructional method for each. By presenting lessons that allow the student to experience that feeling of empowerment, a teacher can impart a lifelong love of learning.
Today’s educators have a plethora of tools at their disposal that will assist their students with their quest for knowledge. Students exposed to hands on experiences as motivating lessons will be at an advantage. Additionally, students well trained in research methods, such as library skills and web quests, will have the expertise to search out the answers to their questions whenever necessary.
By finding out what works best for each child, I as an educator, can ensure that my students will continue to experience those moments. They will discover that the power is within them and that they have the means to begin their journey as lifelong learners.
